Spring Break with a Purpose
“I’ve enjoyed getting my eyes on the medical equipment I’ve only seen on TV or heard about from my auntie who works as an OR nurse. I got to handle a wound vac! I know I’ll never get an opportunity like this again to see such a variety of supplies.”
MedWish MedWorks had the good fortunate of hosting two groups of college students participating in a student-led Alternative Spring Break. Instead of hanging out at the beach or back home with family, they chose to donate their time to volunteer for good.
Our first group from Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY, participating in the school’s “Access to Healthcare” track, spent two afternoons sorting medical supplies in our gross and fine sort areas. Most were nursing or pre-med students. In addition to getting hands-on experience with medical supplies, they had time to visit several Cleveland attractions and cultural sites.
Our volunteers from Howard University in the “Community Health & Youth Empowerment” group sorted medical supplies for two shifts. When these health science majors weren’t at the warehouse, they were visiting local middle and high schools and youth nonprofits sharing with the young people their experiences preparing for and attending college. Their message to the youth: your journey is important whether you decide to go to college or not.
A huge thank you to Bellarmine and Howard for creating an opportunity to benefit both your students and the recipients we serve. If you would like to know more about volunteering at MedWish MedWorks, visit our website HERE.
