Medical Brigade Travels to Honduras to Connect Rural Communities to Healthcare

Access to healthcare shouldn't depend on where you live.

Over six days in July, 22 dedicated MedWish MedWorks volunteers worked alongside local partners in Honduras to bring free medical, dental, pediatric, and women's health services to rural, underserved communities where access to care is often limited.

Together, the team cared for more than 1,000 patients across four clinic sites, treating everything from chronic illnesses and untreated injuries to dental pain and preventive healthcare needs. Families traveled for hours—some leaving home as early as 3 a.m.—for the opportunity to receive care.

Beyond providing treatment, our volunteers helped strengthen access to healthcare for the future. At Santa Rosa de Lima, a clinic MedWish MedWorks supports through annual shipments of medical supplies and equipment made possible by the Department of War's Denton Program, the team piloted a new follow-up care model. Patients identified at earlier clinic sites who needed additional testing were transported back to the clinic for lab work, X-rays, and continued evaluation, creating a more connected continuum of care.

The brigade also delivered humanitarian aid by hand-carrying suitcases filled with medical supplies and hygiene products, ensuring communities had access to both immediate care and essential resources.
