MedWish awards Volunteer of the Year to Alex Massiello

The MedWish team is excited to announce that we have selected Alex Massiello as the 2020 Volunteer of the Year! In his first year as a volunteer with MedWish, Alex has contributed over 350 service hours.

Prior to retirement, Alex was a biomedical engineer at the Cleveland Clinic. His knowledge and skill set have been invaluable to MedWish’s BioMed program. Alex has worked tirelessly to organize, refurbish, and troubleshoot devices and equipment allowing us to send these vital machines to those who need it all over the world.

Alex’s dedication to MedWish is evident through his consistent service as well as through his initiative to mentor CWRU Case School of Engineering Biomedical Engineering students and their affiliate CWRU MedWish group. Alex acts as both a mentor and teacher, providing opportunities for BME students to handle, modify, and learn firsthand how biomedical equipment works.

When asked about Alex’s role as a mentor and impact on the CWRU MedWish program, Dr. Collin Drummond remarked,  “He is more than a volunteer at MedWish, he is a blessing to the BME program. Alex took the initiative to (a) get the process organized, (b) set priorities for student site visits, and (c) mentored the students on what to do… He has perfected the art of knowing when to push students, and then to step back and let them find their own way. He excels in getting students motivated and understanding that hands-on work (not just equations) can be rewarding… I know it might be cliché, but the world is not a small place, but a small number of people count. Alex is one of them.”

We are extremely grateful for Alex’s hard work this past year. We cannot wait to restart this program when the time comes. We would like to extend our sincere thanks and congratulations to Alex for this notable accomplishment!

We would also like to thank Dr. Colin Drummond for his oversight of the CWRU MedWish program at Case Western Reserve University, as well as the student leaders volunteers who visited and helped make a difference this past year.
