KK Free Spirit Fund

06/28/1989 – 06/09/2017

Kayla, a young and dedicated MedWish International volunteer, was born & raised in Cleveland and graduated from Orange  High School. Always seeking adventure, after graduation she left Cleveland for Nevada for college in N Colorado and her passion for snowboarding. She graduated from Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe and moved to Colorado where she became a wedding and event planner at The Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa. Kayla was then hired by The Breckenridge Distillery. Kayla was thrilled for the life ahead of her in Breckenridge.

Sadly, on June 9th, 2017, Kayla died of heatstroke in Baja, Mexico, after the Jeep that she and her boyfriend drove got high-centered in the desert. MedWish created KK’s Free Spirit Fund in her loving memory.

Kayla was a free spirit, living life on her own terms. She loved donating her time to MedWish l and going on medical brigades to provide healthcare to those in need. Since establishing KK’s Free Spirit Fund MedWish sends “Kayla’s Krate,” a crate of medical supplies in Kayla’s name to the neediest of recipients worldwide. The fund also sponsors a brigade trip for a deserving volunteer and awards an outstanding MedWish volunteer with the “Kayla Nicole Schwartz Award.”

Kayla is survived by her parents, Lori Reisman Patterson (Joe Patterson) & H. Jeffrey Schwartz, grandparents, Sidney and Phyllis Reisman, siblings, Sean Shepard, Brooke and Brandon Schwartz, and Megan and Tyler Patterson, and countless aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who miss her smile, spark, generosity and heart.

With your support Kayla’s spirit has impacted many lives all over the world. In 2017, the KK’s Free Spirit Fund raised over $30,000 allowing MedWish to ship much needed medical supplies to Kenya, Zambia and Honduras.

Her MedWish family is honored to continue to celebrate Kayla’s life, and we are ready to see “The Places She Will Go!” in 2018…
